The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

SRI LANKA: The Colombo branch of the Sri Lanka Red Cross, with the financial assistance from the IFRC, launched a regional program around the issue of non-communicable diseases, the largest contributor to the disease burden in Sri Lanka.   Several activities have been launched under this program, including awareness campaigns and exercise training targeted at school children and the general public.

PAKISTAN: More than 240 people have died and over 400,000 others have been displaced as torrential rains and flooding continue in parts of Pakistan. In response, the IFRC is appealing for $12 million to help the Pakistan Red Crescent provide emergency relief aid to 105,000 people in five of the worst affected districts of Sindh over the next four months.

SOMALIA/KENYA: In response to the recent influx of people fleeing the humanitarian crisis in Somalia, the ICRC and Kenya Red Cross Society have stepped up tracing activities in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya. Staff and volunteers Society are giving refugees a chance to make a two-minute phone call to a family member of their choice, anywhere in the world.
