People line up to get their barbecue chicken in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
People lined up well before lunchtime to get a taste of the 44th annual Gyro Chicken Barbecue in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia a few weeks ago. It’s obvious the long-running community event, organized by volunteers from the Gyro Club, hasn’t lost any of its appeal over the years.
According to Dr. Rod Stevenson, who headed up the fundraising barbecue, they prepared more than 2000 chicken dinners again this year. By the looks of it, all were sold shortly after noon. The chickens were carefully cooked in a temporary BBQ set up at the local park and tended to by crews of volunteers who got up at dawn to get the fire going and cook the chickens in batches.
But you know what the best part about it is? The thousands of dollars raised with this barbecue support the local Red Cross swim program for children in the community. Not only do the local kids learn to swim in a natural environment at nearby Melmerby beach, but they also develop important water safety skills. For the community, it’s win-win. A great chicken barbecue that gets everyone out and swimming lessons for all levels in small classes so kids get the most out of the two-week program.
Volunteers barbecue a whole lot of chickens during the annual community fundraiser.
