The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

LIBERIA: As Ivorian refugees continue to seek safety in Liberia, the Red Cross is providing seeds and tools to enable host communities to replenish their depleted food stocks. Around 180,000 refugees remain in Liberia and many communities are struggling to find enough food for the increased population.

JAPAN: The Japanese Red Cross is providing psychological support to people who have been evacuated from the 30km exclusion zone around the Fukushima nuclear power plant, and are now staying in a hotel in Tokyo. A Japanese Red Cross medical team is also visiting, checking on elderly people in their rooms.

TUNISIA: In the border area of south-eastern Tunisia, a massive influx of refugees from Libya is putting huge pressure on water resources already stretched by increased needs resulting from the onset of the dry season. The ICRC, in cooperation with the national water board, is building a 5.3 km water pipeline to link existing wells with the main reservoir of Ben Guerdane.  The new water system, which will be put into operation at the beginning of July, will make it possible to considerably increase the volume of water supplied to transit camps in the cross-border region.
