The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

PAKISTAN: It has almost been one year since the flooding began in Pakistan.  The Pakistan Red Crescent Society, with support from IFRC, is wrapping up its second round of food distribution to 55,000 families in Sindh and Punjab provinces. The Red Cross Red Crescent will supplement this food aid with the distribution of seeds, fertilizer and technical expertise to a further 50,000 of the hardest hit households. More than 17,000 families will also receive cash grants to help them rebuild their damaged homes, or to replace assets lost in the floods so they can resume their work and provide for themselves.

AFGHANISTAN: Fighting has been ongoing west of Qaysar, in Faryab province, since early May, displacing thousands of people from more than 20 villages and triggering a distribution of emergency aid by the ICRC and the Afghan Red Crescent Society.  Thirty ICRC and Afghan Red Crescent staff and volunteers delivered more than 200 metric tonnes of rice, beans, sugar, salt, tea and ghee to over 12,000 displaced people from May 23-26. Blankets, soap, jerry cans, tarpaulins and other emergency items were also distributed.

BANGLADESH: Two years have now passed since a cyclone left its mark on Bangladesh. Since then, the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, with the support of the IFRC, has been working with affected communities, helping those who have lost their homes and livelihoods to create new lives for themselves.
