The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

PARAGUAY: According to the Paraguayan Ministry of Health, at least 25 people have died and 200 are severely ill as a result of a dengue fever outbreak.  The Paraguay Red Cross is focusing its actions on working with communities in volunteer mobilization through the communities’ environmental mingas (community fairs where everyone participates and helps for a purpose), carrying out advocacy and awareness raising and disseminating relevant information through mass media.

CÔTE D’IVOIRE: The security situation in Côte d'Ivoire remains unsettled, and a massive inflow of aid is needed. The ICRC, together with the Ivorian Red Cross, has resumed emergency aid in Abidjan and stepped up assistance for displaced people and others in the west of the country.  This includes the delivery of medical supplies, distributing food, water and other basic necessities, visiting detainees and building water latrines and showers.

PHILIPPINES: It has been six months since the category five typhoon slammed in to the Philippines, and signs of recovery are emerging. Some 4,000 families in Cagayan, Isabela and Kalinga have rebuilt or repaired their homes on a self-help basis after receiving shelter materials from the Red Cross.
