The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our Sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

LIBYA: The IFRC has launched an appeal to cover the urgent needs of people who are fleeing from Libya into neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt.  Relief efforts will include the provision of first-aid and hygiene kits, emergency medical care for the wounded, and the provision of food, water and sanitation.

NEW ZEALAND: The New Zealand Red Cross started a major operation to check on the welfare and needs of people in their homes in Christchurch’s eastern suburbs, which were hit hard by last Tuesday’s 6.3 magnitude earthquake.  A squad of 60 Red Cross volunteers from across the country is now going door-to-door, providing help to residents living in the suburbs of Christchurch.

CÔTE D’IVOIRE: A month after inter-community clashes erupted in the west and centre-west, the humanitarian situation remains difficult for displaced people and their host families. The ICRC and Ivorian Red Cross volunteers are maintaining their assistance for needy people in these areas and throughout the country.
