The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our Sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
LIBYA: In response to the escalating violence in Benghazi and other Libyan cities, the ICRC is calling upon the authorities, demonstrators and all others involved to respect human life and dignity at all times. They are offering to provide support for national medical services in their efforts to care for people injured in the violence, and it stands ready to respond to any other urgent humanitarian needs.
NEW ZEALAND: The Red Cross is responding to a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that has hit the South Island of New Zealand. There is widespread damage throughout Christchurch, including collapsed buildings in the centre of the city and damage to roads and bridges.
SRI LANKA: Over 1 million people have been affected by flooding and according to the meteorological department of Sri Lanka the outlook is bleak, with more rainfall expected across the island in the coming days.
In the most recent wave of flooding 18 people were killed, 22 were injured and three remain missing. An estimated 30,000 homes have been partially or totally damaged and the massive cost of rebuilding infrastructure such as roads, bridges and culverts is still being calculated.
