The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

INDIA: Over 3.4 million people have been affected by severe flooding in Odisha.  Despite hundreds of villages being cut off by the floods, the Indian Red Cross Society has managed to reach many of these communities by boat, and distribute thousands of tarps, towels, kitchen sets, mosquito nets, clothes and dry food.

PAKISTAN: Following some of the worst floods on record, many people are lacking access to clean drinking water.  The Pakistan Red Crescent Society quickly assessed the need and deployed volunteers trained in operating water treatment plants. The staff and volunteers chose sites where they could pump up the accumulated water and turn it into safe drinkable water.  They have so far reached over 127,000 people with 638,700 litres of safe drinking water through three water treatment plants, and over 39,000 water purification tablets or sachets have been distributed to more than 6,200 people.

LIBYA: On October 1, the ICRC was finally able to enter Sirte, which has been under siege for weeks. The team included a doctor and crossed in overland from Misrata. It reached Ibn Sina hospital, inside Sirte, and delivered urgently needed surgical material to treat about 200 wounded people, including dressing kits, body bags, and 400 litres of fuel to run the hospital's generator.
