Timmins group learns value of disaster preparedness

From house fires to large scale flooding, a variety of different emergencies and disasters can happen throughout Canada. When these incidents occur, not knowing what to do can be stressful for those affected.

As one of Canada's most active charity organizations, the Canadian Red Cross responds to emergencies and disasters as they happen, and provides assistance and knowledge to disaster-affected communities to help them recover.

Recently, the Red Cross helped a youth group in Timmins, Ontario, learn more about the risks that are associated with disasters and emergencies, and the steps they can take to be better prepared.

How important is it for Canadians of all ages to know about disaster preparedness? The Canadian Red Cross in Timmins helped a group of young girls better understand the importance of preparedness and gave them the tools needed to react quickly to future emergency situations.

Serenna Besserer, a disaster management coordinator in Timmins, met with a group of Girl Guides to talk about preparing for emergencies.

Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada, gives girls and women the resources they need to make impactful differences and contributions to their communities.

The presence of the Canadian Red Cross allowed participants to gain a greater breadth of knowledge.
