Health Equipment Loan Program

The Red Cross provides a variety of health equipment loan services across B.C. and Yukon.

Short Term Loan Program

The Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) is a community-based service that is made possible through the support of health authorities, donations of used equipment, financial donations, and the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and professional staff.

This program is an integral part of our health care system and the health and safety of our clients is our top priority.

The Red Cross provides a variety of health equipment loan services across B.C. and Yukon.

Short Term Loan Program

We lend basic equipment on a short-term basis to assist people coping with illness, injury or end-of-life at home. 
 

Equipment Available

  • Bath boards
  • Bath stools
  • Bath transfer benches
  • Bathtub safety rails
  • Bed cradles
  • Bed handles
  • Canes – standard and quad
  • Commodes - wheeled, stationary and shower
  • Crutches – axilla and forearm
  • I.V. poles
  • Overbed tables
  • Raised toilet seats
  • Toilet safety frames
  • Wheelchairs - standard and companion
  • Walkers – frame, 2 wheeled, 4 wheeled
 

Application Process

To ensure the safety of our clients, we require a referral from one of the following registered health care professionals listed below:

  • Doctor
  • Chiropractor
  • Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Nurse
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physical Therapist
  • Respiratory Therapist

Customized Community Health Equipment Services in B.C. and Yukon

The Red Cross operates a number of equipment programs tailored to the specific needs of local communities in conjunction with local health authorities.  These include:

HELP Plus

The Red Cross partners with five B.C. health authorities to provide short-term loans of advanced equipment such as hospital beds and patient lifts to eligible clients. Delivery and onsite set-up of equipment is also available.
 

Aids to Independent Living Program

Many seniors coping with long-term illness and injury do not have the financial resources to purchase or rent medical equipment. The Aids to Independent Living program lends health equipment, free-of-charge, to Home Health clients living in the Fraser and Vancouver Coastal Health Regions.

Children’s Medical Equipment Recycling and Loan Service

The Children’s Medical Equipment Recycling and Loan Service (CMERLS) provides recycled, durable, specialized medical and therapeutic equipment to children in B.C.
