How to develop a family emergency plan

When disaster strikes, preparedness can do much to mitigate the effects of severe weather, hurricanes or other emergencies, like a house fire. That's why developing a disaster plan is something every mom and dad should do to make finding family easy following a disaster or emergency.

Begin by contacting your local Canadian Red Cross office to ask about emergencies that are most likely to occur and the warning signals that are set up in your area, like tornado alarms or other alerts. Additionally, ask about resources that may assist with ensuring that family pets and elderly individuals are cared for.

Families should establish meeting areas in case a fire or natural disaster strikes. A neighbour's yard is a good place to meet if a fire occurs, and the basement may be the best spot to gather in case of a tornado. You may also want to choose a location outside of your neighbourhood in case the area is evacuated.

It's a good idea run drills and quiz your kids on the basics of your family finding plan. Additionally, posting details, along with phone numbers and addresses, on the fridge may help keep your plan fresh in everyone's minds.
