Right now the Red Cross is responding to multiple simultaneous disasters in the Asia Pacific region.
- Typhoon Ketsana swept through the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia leaving many communities devastated in its path. Hundreds have been killed and buildings, infrastructure and crops have been severely damaged or destroyed.
- an 8.3 magnitude earthquake generated a tsunami that struck Samoa, Tonga and American Samoa
- A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia Wednesday, followed by a strong aftershock. Over 460 people have been killed and thousands more are buried under rubble.
Red Cross response to these disasters was immediate. Thousands of local volunteers were mobilized, in some cases before storms hit, to help communities evacuate and prepare. Red Cross teams have been helping in search and rescue efforts, distributing emergency relief and providing essential services, such as health care and clean water.
The International Disaster Relief Fund allows us to respond within hours of an emergency, well before any money has been received from supporters. The fund provides an essential lifeline to people when they need our help most.

How We Care For Your Donations to our Appeals
The Canadian Red Cross collects funds to meet the immediate relief and long-term recovery needs of disaster survivors. Should donations supporting a specific Red Cross disaster relief and recovery effort meet the amount required, the Canadian Red Cross will cease collecting donations for the response and will communicate this information immediately to the public.
