Please join us for this special webinar on Protection of Civilians and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) featuring Dr. Simon Bagshaw, an affiliate member of the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University, with over two decades of experience as the Senior Policy Advisor with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva and New York.

Every year, tens of thousands of civilians are killed, physically injured or traumatized due to armed conflicts. Millions more are forced from their homes or displaced, and women and girls, in particular, are subject to appalling sexual and gender-based violence. In 1999, the United Nations’ Security Council added protection of civilians as a “core issue” to its agenda, recognizing the urgent action needed to grapple with the central challenge of ensuring respect for IHL and international human rights law. To that end, the Council releases annual reports which assess compliance with Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict. As the principal drafter of these reports for 13 years, Dr. Bagshaw will provide insight into these reports and the upcoming report scheduled for release in May 2021.
