The
Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
GUATEMALA: Last July,
cases of dengue rose sharply, causing the Guatemalan Red Cross to deploy its ‘dengue prevention plan’ which involved working with authorities and communities to help eliminate potential
breeding grounds and to teach more people how to avoid the disease and recognize its symptoms. Specific problems were identified in various remote communities, including a lack of running water – meaning families tended to collect water in barrels – and a reluctance to make appropriate changes.
IRAQ: Thousands of civilians who
fled the ongoing violence in Al Anbar in search of safety are enduring considerable hardship. Responding to their growing needs, the ICRC has delivered food and essential supplies over the past few days to nearly 12,000 displaced people in Saqlawiya, Ramadi, Heet, Habbaniya, Abu Ghraib, Rahalliya, Nasaf, Fallujah and Tikrit, as well as in the areas north of Babel and west of Karbala.
