The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

PERU: Several communities in Peru are struggling to recover from the harsh effects of a cold snap which has brought low 20130910-peru-cold-main-1temperatures, snowfall, hail and heavy rains. The severe weather caused a significant rise in cases of pneumonia, conjunctivitis and respiratory infections, affecting vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those already dealing with illness. To support their response, the Peruvian Red Cross has requested the support of the IFRC to implement protection activities focused on livelihoods for 1,000 families in the region of Puno.  Activities will complement work already underway with support from the German Red Cross and ECHO, which includes the provision of medical supplies, blankets, hygiene promotion and hygiene kits for 1,500 families.

GUATEMALA: After a traffic incident which has affected 40 families in San Martin Jilotepeque, Chimaltenango, the Guatemalan Red Cross has been carrying out psychosocial support activities to provide assistance to the friends and families of at least 48 people who died.
