The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

INDONESIA: One month after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Aceh Province, the Red Cross continues to support affected 20130802-indonesia-main1communities. Following the quake, the Indonesian Red Cross Society deployed 32 volunteers to assist with search and rescue operations, assess needs and distribute relief supplies. A rapid response team of ten staff from the Red Cross headquarters in Jakarta was also deployed to the affected area to assist with assessments, and health and medical services. In addition to providing hundreds of earthquake survivors with medical treatment from three Red Cross mobile health clinics, the Red Cross has distributed relief supplies in 24 villages, including over 600 family kits, 500 tarpaulins, 1,600 blankets, 200 baby kits, clothing and other essential supplies.

MYANMAR: Severe flooding in southern Myanmar has caused devastation in many towns and villages with reports of landslides, flash floods and river banks collapsing. Red Cross distributions over the weekend reached over 15,000 people in 11 townships in Mon and Kayin States, and more emergency relief items are en route to the affected areas. With further rains predicted, the Red Cross has also deployed trained technical staff and volunteers to support emergency relief and assessment teams. The Red Cross has been working with communities throughout the country to prepare for monsoon season. Volunteers have trained local residents in first aid, helped families identify safe evacuation routes and shared disaster preparedness advice and tips.
