The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
MOZAMBIQUE: Thanks to early warning systems in Mozambique, tens of thousands of families survived deadly flooding. Improved climate science, combined with the commitment of the authorities to disseminate warnings through radio and volunteers with the Mozambique Red Cross Society, meant people had time to pack and leave for higher ground. During the floods of 2000, over 700 people died. So far in 2013, fewer than 100 have lost their lives.
MALI: The recent fighting and troop movements compelled thousands of people to move within Mali or to seek refuge in neighbouring countries. Some of them are now starting to return home, but they are totally destitute and living in extremely precarious conditions. The ICRC and the Mali Red Cross continue to provide them with assistance, in particular food.
