The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
MEXICO: Following the severe impact of Hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel, Mexican Red Cross volunteers and staff have continued responding, sending aid to relieve the communities most heavily hit by the storms. Since the onset of the tropical storms, the Mexican Red Cross has sent over 7,000 volunteers and technicians to respond to the immediate needs of affected people in the states of Guerrero, Veracruz and Tamaulipas.
SUDAN: In response to flash flooding in August, Red Crescent staff and more than 2,800 volunteers have collaborated with the government and other stakeholders to help distribute emergency relief items to at least 42,153 households, using its own stocks and donated items.
IRAQ: Conflict and harsh living conditions in Syria are driving thousands of families into neighbouring countries for refuge. Around 2,000 people are sheltering in Al-Obeidi refugee camp in the Anbar Governorate of western Iraq, just 30 kilometres from the Syrian border. Many refugees have relatives back in Syria or elsewhere. The ICRC is working in partnership with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society and with the UNHCR’s support to help the refugees maintain family contacts.
