The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

MIDDLE EAST: Several countries in the Middle East continue to experience severe winter weather that has caused20131011-international-mena-freeze-main-1 casualties across the region and increased the suffering of Syrians fleeing violence to neighbouring countries. Torrential rain has caused massive flooding in many areas and the snowfall paralyzed many parts of Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Syria; making access to people in need more difficult. Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies in the region have been working around the clock to respond to the different emerging humanitarian needs.

MALI: With the situation throughout the country continuing to arouse concern, recent clashes in central Mali between the national army and groups based in the north threaten to make living conditions more difficult still for an already sorely tried population. The ICRC and the Mali Red Cross are stepping up their work to help people affected by the conflict in the north and in the Mopti area. This largely involves food aid, medical care and programs to furnish drinking water.
