2011 blogging year-in-review

A blog we wrote about this vending machine in Japan got 3,000 hits

It's the New Year – an opportunity to look back at what we have shared on this blog this past year.

All last year, we blogged about various topics - from the serious to the more quirky and light-hearted – to help you get to know better the work of the Red Cross.

Here are some of the highlights:

 Around the world

When Japan was struck by a devastating earthquake and tsunami in March, bloggers immediately stepped-in to help by doing what else? Blogging. In response, we wrote a blog thanking bloggers for their support. Months later, we wrote about a special vending machine by the Coca-Cola Co. to help the Japanese Red Cross raise funds for recovery efforts. The blog was featured on the Wordpress.com homepage and had over 3,000 hits.

In July, we shared an incredible story of Canadian Red Cross staff in Haiti helping a woman give birth to her child in a car, and a story about 1,700 Finnish youth creating the world's largest Red Cross.

Here at home

During the year, we had a number of blogs about our work in Canada including testing blog readers on their pool safety knowledge, explaining how we build wheelchairs in the Maritimes,  and sharing a water safety video featuring journalist Amber Mac.

When wildfires devastated the town of Slave Lake, AB in May we wrote several blogs about how the Red Cross was responding to the disaster. We also had a blog about a Red Cross volunteer who met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when they made a special stop in Slave Lake while touring Canada in July.

We also featured stunning images by Red Cross volunteer photographer Johan Hallberg-Campbell following a tornado in Goderich, ON in late August, and more recently, the Red Cross response in Attawapiskat.

Guest bloggers

We had a few guest bloggers during the year including Twitter Team member Joallore Alon, (known as @clickflickca on Twitter) who blogged about why he was co-hosting a CPR Tweet-up in Toronto and Sharon DeVellis from the YummyMummy Club about why water safety should be a priority for parents.

Food Friday

Finally, food was once again a popular topic on our blog. For Thanksgiving, Twitter Team members Bif Naked, Jillian Harris and Miss604 shared some of their favourite holiday recipes and memories. We also shared a way to add bacon to your emergency kit, why chocolate is an emergency kit must-have, and how to disaster dine like a vegan chef.

We wish you and your family all the best in 2012.
