The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

PAKISTAN: Following the 2010 super floods, more than 150 families found refuge in a camp set up by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society, with support from the Swiss Red Cross, where they were provided with food and basic non-food items.  Eight months later, it is time for these families to leave this camp to return to the familiar surroundings of their own villages.  Even though their houses were damaged or destroyed, Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers are trying to make the move home as smooth as possible, arranging transportation, carrying their valuables, and pitching tents in their yards.

LIBYA: The ICRC is stepping up its operational response in Misrata.  In the past week, 150 hygiene kits, 20 cubic metres of food and 8,000 litres of water have been handed over to the Libyan Red Crescent Society, and three cubic metres of medical supplies has been distributed to Al Hikma Hospital.  ICRC delegates also visited a number of detainees held in connection with the recent fighting and collected "safe and well" messages from civilians to be delivered to their families in Libya and abroad.

MYANMAR: Six months after Cyclone Giri made landfall, the Red Cross remains committed to helping those whose lives were devastated by the cyclone to get back on their feet. Shelter and livelihoods have been identified as the top needs for the people affected by the storm.
