The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
SRI LANKA: In response to the acute housing deficit in Sri Lanka, the Red Cross is providing cash grants to homeowners for house construction and offering a two-step livelihoods grant to enable homeowners to extend their income opportunities. These opportunities created through purchasing items for a business, or agricultural and fishing activities. A further grant supports the construction of a household sanitation system in line with the traditional attitudes in this rural area.
TIMOR-LESTE: A team of well-trained Red Cross volunteers recently demonstrated their importance to the community by delivering life-saving first aid to victims of a horrific collision in regional Timor-Leste.
Four people died and almost 20 more were seriously injured when troupe-carrier crashed two hours south of Dili.
LIBYA: More than 100 surgeons will enhance their skills treating gunshot- and blast-wounded patients in a seminar that will be held at the Abu Salim Hospital in Tripoli from 12 to 14 December. The training is being co-organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Ministry of Health.
