The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

WORLDWIDE: Tuberculosis (TB) still kills around 1.4 million people each year, with one third of the world’s population being infected without necessarily ever falling ill. In an event organized by the IFRC at the 31st International Conference, National Societies and partners from the World Health Organization, Stop TB partnership, Elli Lilly, and others came together to point out that all TB affected countries should increase efforts to reach out to patients and promote the human rights-based approach to dealing with the TB challenge.

LIBYA: In recent weeks, the ICRC has continued to visit hundreds of detainees held by various authorities and to clear unexploded ordnance in Sirte and Bani Walid. It has provided 30,000 people returning to central Sirte with much-needed assistance, including medical assistance, blankets and hygiene items.

YEMEN: The ICRC is deeply alarmed by escalating violence in the Yemeni city of Taiz. At the same time, the security situation in the city is making it extremely difficult for medical personnel and facilities to treat people injured in the violence. The ICRC calls on the authorities, fighters and all others involved to respect human life and dignity and to allow first aid and medical teams to treat and transport injured people safely.
