The Red Cross Round-up

*Written by Katie Robinson, Communications Coordinator with the Canadian Red Cross*

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our Sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

COLOMBIA: The intense rains that have affected Colombia in recent months have caused the overflow of creeks and rivers in 28 of the 32 departments in the country, leaving more than one and a half million people without homes.  More than 354 tonnes of humanitarian aid has been organized by the Colombian Red Cross for more than 22,340 families.

SUDAN: ICRC, working in cooperation with the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, has launched the latest phase of a campaign to vaccinate 700,000 animals against five major endemic diseases in Darfur.  Due to its long-standing neutrality, the ICRC, the Sudanese Red Crescent and other Red Cross/Red Crescent partners, are among the few organizations able to reach and assist conflict affected communities in Darfur.

Red Cross is at the forefront of humanitarian action in the region, providing shelter and household items, access to water and healthcare, and helping people recover their farms and other livelihoods. Red Cross is also reuniting families separated by conflict and monitoring respect for international humanitarian law.

HAITI: This November, the Canadian Red Cross brought colour into many lives through the community-based “paint program”. This program gives Canadian Red Cross shelter beneficiaries the opportunity to paint their new homes in the colours of their choice.
