The Lifeguard Instructor Development program teaches the instructional skills and knowledge required to mentor and develop future lifeguards. Our two-step certification program will prepare you to teach Red Cross Lifeguard Courses. This program teaches lifeguards the skills they need to prevent and respond to emergencies, create and maintain safe aquatic environments, work in teams, and with patrons in a professional manner.

Instructors are supported with dynamic instructional resources that make it easy to customize their lesson plans, and access to teaching tools and activities.


How to become a Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor

Pre-course Requirements: current Standard First Aid with CPR-C, current Red Cross Pool or Waterfront Lifeguard certification, and 18 years of age or older.

Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard Instructor - online, plus, Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard Instructor - Classroom and Pool or Waterfront, plus, Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard Instructor - Teaching Experience. Those three steps will allow you to become a Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard Instructor. Next stage is Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor - Classroom and Pool or Waterfront, plus, Red Cross Lifeguard Intructor - Teaching Experience. Those together will then allow you to become a Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor.

This course provides candidates with the instructional skills and knowledge to teach the Assistant Lifeguard Course, Assistant Lifeguard Transfer Course and Assistant Lifeguard Recertification Course. Through a combination of online, classroom, and pool or waterfront learning experiences, candidates will develop session planning skills using various teaching strategies, while applying principles of safety supervision. They will develop leadership and communication skills, and techniques to provide feedback and evaluate skills and scenarios. The focus will be on how to effectively plan, teach, and evaluate the participant Assistant Lifeguard Course. Candidates will learn strategies for teaching and developing swimming and water safety skills.

Certification
Assistant Lifeguard Instructor certification current for 2 years.

This course will focus on key information that builds on prior learning and knowledge acquired during the Assistant Lifeguard Instructor Course. Candidates will learn instructional techniques for classroom and waterfront or pool activities, and strategies for developing positive relationships and communication skills required for evaluating Lifeguard course participants as well as Assistant Lifeguard Instructor candidates. The training includes a focus on developing candidates’ personal growth and confidence through self-reflection, discipline, and conflict resolution skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, certified Instructors will be qualified to teach the following:

  • Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard Course, AND
  • Red Cross Pool Lifeguard, Pool Lifeguard Transfer and Pool Lifeguard Recertification courses, and Waterfront Lifeguard to Pool Lifeguard, OR
  • Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard, Waterfront Lifeguard Transfer, Waterfront Lifeguard Recertification, and Pool Lifeguard to Waterfront Lifeguard.

Pre-Course Requirements
18 years of age or older; current Standard First Aid with CPR-C; proof of previously held Assistant Lifeguard Instructor certification; current Red Cross Pool Lifeguard or Waterfront Lifeguard certification.

Certification
Pool Lifeguard Instructor AND/OR Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor certification current for 2 years*.

*Instructor certification options are dependent on the candidate’s participant level certification(s) identified in the pre-course requirements.
