Cancellation notice of Water Safety Programs in PEI

CHARLOTTETOWN – Swimming and water safety camps that have been a summer tradition for children and youth throughout Prince Edward Island for more than 70 years will not proceed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This was a difficult decision and we know it is a disappointment for camp participants, their parents and our staff but we determined it was neither physically nor financially viable to host hundreds of children and youth at beaches and pools where close supervision and contact with instructors is essential for their safety but would not be compliant with social distancing and other COVID-19 health orders that are likely to remain in force through the summer,” said Bill Lawlor, PEI and New Brunswick provincial director of the Canadian Red Cross.

This would have been the 74th consecutive season for the summer day camps held every year since 1946 by the Canadian Red Cross with funding from the Government of Prince Edward Island to subsidize staffing and the cost of busing children and youth to and from the camps, which last year helped more than 650 children and youth improve their swimming, water safety and recreational boating skills, and their environmental awareness.

Camps that run for several hours a day in one-week increments had been scheduled June 29 to August 28 at 14 locations from Souris at the eastern end of PEI through to Tignish near the western end tip of the province.

The Red Cross will provide full refunds for the more than 200 children already registered for 2020 camps.  Ten seasonal instructors normally hired for the two-month camp season have been notified.

“We look forward to the 2021 season when we can also celebrate 75 years since the introduction of these camps and the untold lives that may have been saved by improving the swimming, boating and water safety skills not just for tens of thousands of Islanders but for millions of Canadians coast to coast who have benefitted over the decades from Red Cross swimming and water safety programs that trace their roots to this PEI tradition,” said Lawlor.
