Fort McMurray and Area Floods

On April 26, 2020, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) declared a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) due to high water levels and flooding along the Athabasca, Snye and Clearwater Rivers. More than 13,000 people were evacuated.

In support of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and Mackenzie County, the Canadian Red Cross is providing a range of services to support households, small businesses and not-for-profit organizations directly affected by flooding in Fort McMurray and the surrounding area.

Donor Update

The Canadian Red Cross is thankful to individuals, governments, community groups and corporate partners for their support of residents impacted by flooding in 2020. Jenn McManus, the vice-president of Red Cross in Alberta and Northwest Territories, says staff and volunteers continue to provide assistance as individuals, families and the community work towards recovery.

“It is an honour for our Red Cross team to work with our community partners in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. We built a strong foundation of collaboration in the Fort McMurray area following the 2016 Alberta Fires and that meant we were – and are – better prepared to respond together when disasters and emergencies happen.”

Canadian Red Cross is committed to providing information on our operations and on how donations are being spent. You will find our updates for this disaster response below:
