The Canadian Red Cross launched its First Aid App in 2013. Designed for Apple and Android devices, it is free to download and when it launched, Don Marentette, national manager of Canadian Red Cross First Aid programs said the app is a convenient way for “Canadians to learn about what to do in multiple medical emergencies, from severe bleeding to broken bones to heart attacks.” The app also connects users to videos, interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice about maintaining life-saving skills and responding when needed.

A 2013 survey conducted for the Red Cross underscored the need for first aid skills. According to the poll, roughly 40 per cent of Canadians have been in emergency situations where they needed to use first aid to help someone. However, despite the high rate of involvement in these situations, only half of those surveyed felt they had the skills to sufficiently help someone affected by an emergency. Significantly, the survey also found that respondents believed they could identify the signs of a medical emergency, such as a heart attack.

Medical emergencies can transform the lives of victims and their support networks. The ability to intervene to help save a life can not only positively impact the victim but the life-saver too. The mobile First Aid App has the potential to be a powerful tool, both as a source of information in emergencies, but perhaps most of all as a way of brushing up on one’s knowledge, and staying connected to news about humanitarian needs.

Certainly, the app is a logical follow-up on the Red Cross’ commitment to providing first aid and safety training and information to individuals and community organizations. This commitment goes back further than 50 years, when after the Second World War the organization was expanding beyond its roots as a neutral humanitarian movement providing assistance to victims of war.
