What began as an online search for a mannequin to be used in a small display of historical items at our Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, building has reacquainted us with a long-retired volunteer who had an exceptional history with the Canadian Red Cross in Nova Scotia.

Volunteering is one of the Red Cross’ fundamental principles. You could say it’s part of the DNA of the organization. We wanted to share a few of the reasons why Canadian Red Cross volunteers dedicate so much of their time helping others.

It really is the season of giving! With a recent Red Cross survey showing a majority of Canadians want to give back this holiday season, we thought we'd take a look at how to do that.

Say hello to lifelong Red Cross supporter Betty Anderson! But had Betty’s mother not slept in the morning of the Halifax Explosion on Dec. 6, 1917, we would have missed out on meeting an extraordinary woman and lifelong supporter of the Canadian Red Cross.

Recently, Diane Story and Todd Weiss were awarded the Order of the Red Cross in recognition of their amazing commitment to humanitarian service. 

When Williams Lake resident Cindy Lahaise returned home after having to evacuate this summer, she decided she wanted to help her community recover. Cindy jumped at the chance to become a volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross at her local resiliency centre. 

This week, at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention in Vancouver, three outstanding water safety volunteers were inducted as members of the Order of Red Cross - our society's highest honour - in recognition for their years of dedication.
In appreciation of their ongoing commitment to the community, we are pleased to welcome Anne Porteous, Wayne Little and Janice Makepeace to the Order of the Red Cross!

In our current era which favours immediacy over careful contemplation, some things still take a lifetime to achieve – and they are worth the wait. Just ask Red Deer’s Women of Excellence Lifetime Achievement award winner, Nora Styner. A long-time Canadian Red Cross volunteer, Styner also took home the Red Deer & Community’s leadership award in the category of Athletics, Recreation and Fitness. Both awards symbolize Styner’s unwavering commitment to volunteerism.
