The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

PHILIPPINES: Across the Haiyan recovery operation in Leyte, Panay and Cebu, Red Cross and Red 20150714-philippines-scholarship-main-1-(1).jpgCrescent partners, including the IFRC, are sponsoring up to 1,000 young people who dropped out of school early or whose families cannot afford to put them through further education. Before, many were resigned to dead-end jobs just to put a meal on the table. But the scholarships are giving them a real chance to find decent employment and even save for a business of their own.  So far, most students are enrolled in Leyte and Panay, with more due to start in Cebu in coming weeks. For now, they can choose between food and beverage, electrical, welding and housekeeping.

SOLOMON ISLANDS: Weeks of heavy rain have deluged the Solomon Islands over the last month, affecting an estimated 10,000 people across the country. The rains, which began at the end of June, intensified in early July with the arrival of cyclone Raquel and the prolonged downpours have blocked many roads and access routes and also affected power and communications lines.  To improve communications with people affected by the recent heavy rains, the Red Cross is broadcasting daily radio spots on the country’s national radio station; Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation.  Over the coming days Red Cross volunteers will visit communities in Choiseul, Isobel and Western Province, to gather information on the damage caused and to plan their response. The Red Cross is also warning families of the need to stay safe and healthy by broadcasting a second daily radio spot, focusing on how to prevent illnesses such as diarrhea.
