Photo of the day: Young Ebola survivor makes mission worthwhile for Canadian doctor

Dr Serrar with his young patient

Guest post by Elizabeth Smith, guest blogger and media advisor for the Canadian Red Cross

Dr. Jamal Serrar, a Quebec-based emergency doctor, has just completed a one-month assignment working at the Ebola Treatment Centre at Forécariah, Guinea, run by the French Red Cross.

He shared with us the joyous news of a three-year-old girl’s recovery from Ebola at the Centre. This outcome is doubly gratifying as all the people from her village had died from Ebola.

“For her alone - my mission was worth it,” says Dr. Serrar.

Dr. Serrar is photographed with the little girl, dubbed the Princess of Guinea from Forécariah. Mangue is the local Guinean word for princess.

In Guinea, the Ebola epidemic is not over, with more than a dozen new cases reported last week. The Red Cross is continuing to respond to the outbreak, focusing on emergency response, as well as recovery in affected countries.
