The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

Iraq: The escalation of violence in Iraq has forced hundreds of thousands from their homes. Fighting carried out by armed groups has reached several major cities in the country including Mosul, Samara, Baquba, and Ramadi. Mosul, the second city of Iraq, has fallen under the control of armed groups along with most of the province of Ninewa. Through its branches in Erbil, Dohuk, Sulaimaniah and Kirkuk governorates, the Iraqi Red Crescent Society immediately responded and activated an operations room to provide food aid and tents for the families displaced from Mosul to the northern provinces. In just two days, more than 300,000 individuals have entered Kurdistan region, according to the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, and more than 32,000 displaced people from Mosul had to sleep in the open. Families are now taking refuge in host communities, mosques and public buildings, and others are temporarily residing in hotels. Volunteers continue to work tirelessly to assist the displaced.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: One month after the devastating floods that forced tens of thousands of people to leave their homes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, roughly 1,500 people still remain in 55 evacuation centres. Not only have most people lost everything in their homes, but many have also lost their livelihoods. The Red Cross is continuing to provide food, hygiene kits and support in the evacuation centres until they can get back on their feet.
