The
Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
SYRIA: In March and April, the delivery of
water, food and other aid items to people
affected by the conflict continued to be a major challenge. Amid ongoing hostilities, the ICRC assisted over 900,000 people across the country, working closely with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
AFGHANISTAN: On May 2, a
catastrophic landslide covered an area near the village of Abi-Barak in the province of Badakhshan, in the North-East of Afghanistan. The Afghan Red Crescent Society deployed an emergency team along with two mobile medical teams to the area. Each mobile medical team has four members: a doctor, pharmacist, nurse or vaccinator and a driver. On the ground, they are supported by volunteers specialized in community-based health and emergency first aid. Some temporary shelters have also been erected and 50 families are now living in tents. Kitchen-sets, hygiene-kits and blankets are being sent to the area.
MALI: Over 2,600
detainees have been treated for scabies in an eradication campaign run by the Malian prison authorities, with the support of the ICRC, in the prisons of Sikasso, Kati and Bamako.
