Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

UNITED KINGDOM: As thousands of people across the UK continue to struggle against the bad weather, the British Red Cross is working round the clock to help those hit hardest by the floods.  In the past week, around 600 emergency response volunteers have directly helped almost 5,000 people – delivering supplies, transporting stranded residents and carrying out welfare checks in inaccessible areas.  The British Red Cross is also supporting the emergency services and helping run seven rest centres in flood-hit areas.

SYRIA: Adra City was home to 50,000 people but had received 200,000 displaced people after fighting broke out in the East Ghota of Damascus. Starting on December 29, Syrian Arab Red Crescent Rural Damascus teams worked continuously to deliver much-needed aid to these residents. Syrian Arab Red Crescent teams distributed over 14,000 food parcels, 31,000 blankets, 7,000 mattresses and 4,500 hygiene kits, in addition to towels, baby and elderly diapers, clothes, candles, kitchen sets and bread. They have also provided first aid to 500 people, as well as health services and medical supplies to over 8,000 people. To support efforts to provide assistance to Syrians affected by the conflict, make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross Syria Crisis Fund.
