The Red Cross in Moose Cree First Nation in Northern Ontario off the James Bay coast is teaching the community to Be Ready for disasters.

The Red Cross is participating in the Gathering of Our People, an annual festival celebrating First Nations culture and heritage happening in Moose Cree this week. As part of the festival, the Red Cross will make a presentation showing videos on how to prepare for disasters specific to First Nations communities in Northern Ontario, such as flooding, forest fires and other disasters that may force evacuations.

Working with community leaders, the Red Cross has also created brochures with information specific to community members and issues. For example, brochures, translated into Cree, were created for elders, children, and those with specific health issues such as diabetes.  A booth was also set up for community members to learn more about the Red Cross.

The Red Cross office in Moose Cree opened in November and is the first Red Cross satellite office in an Ontario First Nations community.
