The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

INDONESIA: Over 230 Indonesian Red Cross staff and volunteers quickly responded to flooding in Jakarta after two20130122-indonesia-floods-main days of torrential rain poured the capital city and outlying areas including Bogor, Bekasi and Tangerang. The Indonesian Red Cross sent out five water rescue teams in partnership with local authorities to search and save trapped residents in affected areas. Eventually, they rescued 100 residents in five villages around east and south Jakarta.  The organization has provided almost 25,000 meal packages per day for the 20,000 survivors currently living in tents and shelters.

SYRIA: At the beginning of January, Kuwait Red Crescent field teams headed to Jordan and Lebanon to oversee the provision of relief assistance to 20,000 Syrian refugee families who left their homes fleeing from violence.  The ten day campaign started with the distribution of food parcels from Jerash governorate in Northern Jordan to 300 families. In total, the assistance in Lebanon and Jordan includes 20,000 food parcels sufficient to cover basic food needs for families for one month. Twenty thousand blankets have also been provided to assist families in coping with oncoming winter. The Kuwait Red Crescent has been actively involved in supporting the affected Syrian population since the outbreak of the unrest. Their efforts in reaching people inside and outside Syria have also played an essential role in bridging the humanitarian assistance between the Kuwaiti and Syrian people.
