The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.
Camps are being prepared to deal with the expected harsh winter near the border with Syria.
Turkey: Syrians who fled conflict at home and took shelter in neighbouring countries such as Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, have been living away from their homeland for more than 18 months. It is estimated that 500,000 people have left Syria since the outbreak of violence in 2011, and while they wait for the opportunity to return, the Turkish Red Crescent Society is providing support and shelter, especially as the winter begins to deepen. Visit the IFRC website to read more about the camps that the Turkish Red Crescent Society has set up.
Madagascar: Throughout December, 21 youth volunteers from the Comoros Red Crescent, the Malagasy Red Cross Society and the Seychelles Red Cross Society worked alongside facilitators from the Mauritius Red Cross Society and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) over six days to experience and learn what it means to be agents of change. The training provided the youth the ability to become more effective leaders while making a transformation within themselves and their communities. The participants were trained and familiarized with concepts, tools and methods, enabling them to go back to their communities as peer educators and start a process of change.
