The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

CHINA: Supported by International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Red Cross Society of China  launched a community-based health and first-aid project in 2009 to bring basic knowledge of disease prevention, first aid, and emergency preparation to their own communities. To date, the project has trained 1,130 volunteers from local communities in four provinces and has directly reached 20, 000 families.

VIETNAM: In the wake of the ongoing Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease health crisis in Vietnam, the Red Cross has mobilized hundreds of volunteers to conduct a massive public information campaign targeting caretakers of children under five. Since the incidence of the disease first began to increase rapidly last year, the Vietnam Red Cross has moved swiftly to educate people in the hardest-hit communities about how to reduce the risks. To date, it has trained more than 750 volunteers and produced a wide range of public information tools to educate parents and caretakers on the importance of good hygiene, such as regular hand washing and covering mouths when coughing or sneezing.
