The Canadian Red Cross is on scene in Iqaluit helping the community following a fire in a townhouse complex that left many families homeless.

Last night in Ottawa, Canadian Red Cross volunteers, shown below, packed 43 boxes of supplies, including comfort kits, baby supplies, blankets and bedding that are bound for Iqaluit today. A disaster management volunteer from Ottawa is traveling to Iqaluit with the supplies to co-ordinate the Red Cross response there.

Just two weeks ago, Canadian Red Cross disaster responders from Western Canada were in Iqaluit training 14 people from the community to be Red Cross volunteers so that they could respond to emergencies, such as this current one.

Canadian Red Cross is grateful for generous contributions received from First Air and North Mart to assist with the response to this fire. First Air has donated a round-trip flight to ship Canadian Red Cross emergency supplies. North Mart is providing emergency supplies for infants, including milk and diapers, as well as a donation of up to $10,000 to provide necessary supplies to those impacted by the fire.

The Red Cross also thanks the Ottawa Fire Service, whose members helped our team this morning by providing a cube van to transport boxes and unloading them at the airport.
