Four kids make an ordinary day extraordinary at Red Cross in Toronto

Last Friday, it appeared at first glance like it would be a regular February day around the Canadian Red Cross Toronto office. However, we had no clue that four children would come by and put a smile on all of our faces.

Julia and her brothers Benjamin and Henry saved their allowance to make a donation to Red Cross.

In the morning, an 8-year-old girl (and her mom) arrived, bringing with her $100 - allowance money that she had been saving for weeks. She wanted to donate it to our Mobile Food Bank program which delivers food to individuals unable to get to a food bank due to injury, illness, or other health issues. The girl had visited the food bank during a school field trip, and decided she wanted to make a difference in her community by making a donation to help the program.

A few hours later, three more kids came for a visit: Julia and her younger brothers, Benjamin and Henry, who were also with their mom. They had also saved up their allowance and held fundraisers to raise $55. They decided to give the money to the Canadian Red Cross after hearing about our work in Haiti. It was the first donation they had ever made to any charity.

We are always touched when anyone decides to make a donation to us, but the fact that these children are so young, and wanted to help others through the work of Red Cross really moved us. It reminded us why we do the work we do; it was a great way to end a work week.

Thanks to all four of them for their support!
