The Red Cross Round-up

*Written by Katie Robinson, communications coordinator with the Canadian Red Cross*

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our Sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

BRAZIL: Rain has brought widespread devastation to Nova Friburgo and neighbouring cities, affecting thousands of people.   The Brazilian Red Cross – together with the IFRC and ICRC – has been working alongside government authorities in search and rescue activities, and in first aid.  As part of the IFRC emergencies team, Canadian Red Cross delegate Chiran Livera is in Brazil responding to this disaster.

AUSTRALIA: The Australian Red Cross is responding to widespread flooding in the southern and central areas of Queensland.

SRI LANKA: So far, more than one million people have been affected as a result of  intense rains that hit the Eastern, Northern and Central provinces. The Sri Lanka Red Cross, with the support of the IFRC has released $100,000 to assist the communities affected by the floods and landslides in the country.

HAITI: Hygiene promotion has been underway since the first weeks of the earthquake response.  As well as visiting camps, volunteers are now also visiting markets to raise awareness among vendors and their customers about cholera prevention.
