Volunteer from Ontario receives highest Red Cross award

Last December, we told you about Bonnie Kearns, a Canadian Red Cross delegate from Sarnia, ON, who was deployed to Haiti to help set up our field hospital there.

We’re happy to announce that Bonnie recently received the Red Cross’ highest honour: The Order of the Red Cross, Member Level. The award recognizes outstanding humanitarian service, dedication, and achievement on behalf of the Society and the world at large.

Now, you already know that Bonnie has worked with Red Cross in Haiti. But, here are some things that you might not know about her:

  1. Bonnie has been a volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross over 25 years at her local branch, devoting her time and talents to the disaster management, Meals on Wheels and transportation programs.
  2. She is passionate about disaster management. She has responded to several disasters – such as house fires – in her community, and also teaches emergency preparedness to local groups such as Girl Guides and Scouts. She has also assisted in the aftermath of several large scale disasters in the US including 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.
  3. A registered nurse, she has travelled abroad to Afghanistan and Pakistan, in addition to Haiti, as a Red Cross delegate.
  4. She is one of the most wonderful, down-to-earth, kind-hearted people you will ever meet. I have met her in-person on a few occasions, and can say this truthfully.

After reading all of this, if you think that Bonnie is an exceptional person, you’re right and we wholeheartedly agree!

Congrats Bonnie on your award!
