Would you know what to do?

If you were coming down the escalator/stairs at a busy shopping mall and noticed someone at the bottom of it, sprawled out on the ground and not moving, would you know what to do?

The Red Cross put Canadians to the test a few years back with an awareness campaign consisting of life-like decals of a man or woman laying on the ground.  From the top of the escalator, it looked real! When you got close, you could see it was a decal with a sign from the Canadian Red Cross reminding you to “know what to do” in case someone is in need of first aid.

A powerful campaign, it created a lot of buzz, especially in the advertising and marketing industry – not to mention the thousands of Canadians that stepped over the decals in the malls. The campaign has since been used by other Red Cross societies, including ones in Iceland and some U.S. cities. This year, our sister society in Colorado plans to use it.

World First Aid Day is coming up on Saturday. And it’s a good time to ask yourself – would you know what to do? It’s never too late to learn first aid!
