Red Cross drivers take on the globe’s circumference – 80 times!

Did you know that Red Cross volunteer drivers drove 80 times around the circumference of the earth last year alone?

That’s 241,000 rides to important medical appointments and 297, 300 meals delivered for seniors and those with disabilities.

An essential program in the Red Cross, Meals On Wheels started in WWII with the “Women’s Voluntary Services” - a group of volunteers that went into the community with mobile canteens to provide meals to war orphans and individuals who had lost their homes.

Since then, they haven’t stopped working hard! Today, the program is made possible by volunteers who prepare the food and others who deliver it to those who are unable to prepare their own meals.

Red Cross drivers also volunteer for the Transportation Services program to help those in need get to important medical appointments.

Our volunteers make these programs a success because they take pride in their work for the Red Cross and care about the people they drive. One transportation driver is Ted Davis, of Oakville, who drove five days per week before retiring last winter.

A true Red Cross veteran, he first started driving more than 30 years ago, rightfully earning himself the nickname “Father Transportation.”
