Watch the Emergency Social Data Summit online

There is no question that popular social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are changing the way people communicate. It’s even changing the way that people call for help or share news. Consider this: when a small earthquake was felt in some parts of Canada, many of us tweeted or updated our Facebook status to share news about whether we felt it and what we were doing at the time. In Haiti, where the quake was enormous and the devastation extreme, people turned to social media to call out for help when other lines were not working.

Because it’s changing the way people communicate, it’s also changing the way emergency responders, such as the Red Cross, do their jobs. To address this, the American Red Cross in Washington is bringing in experts in government agencies, emergency management, disaster response and tech companies for the Emergency Social Data Summit on Thursday, August 12. You can read the full summit agenda here.

Realizing that Red Crossers around the globe will benefit from this conference, the organizers are opening it up to everyone by broadcasting the entire conference over the internet. To watch the conference live, all that you need to do is register on Eventbrite for U-Stream details.
