Making sure your vehicle is ready

Driving along a remote portion of highway and your see your temperature gauge creeping higher and higher, steam coming out from under your hood, red lights on your dashboard.  You pull over to the side of the road in 30 degree heat.  Yep, you thought it would never happen to you, but you are stranded.

Have you thought about what would you do if this happened?

Now is the time to create a plan for being stranded. We hope it will never happen, but chances are it might. Whether it is the hottest day in the summer or the snowiest, coldest day in winter you really should have a few things in case you get stuck.

Water is one of the essentials.  Make it a habit of filling a water container for every car trip.  If nothing else it will keep you hydrated. Your car needs fluids too, so make sure you keep a container of water in your trunk in case of overheating.

Here are some other things that would be helpful, and are easy enough to store in your vehicle:

  • A crank flashlight
  • Some sort of colourful alerting flag in yellow, red or orange material attached to your antennae
  • Flares or other warning device to place several metres behind your car to warn people you are there and need help.
