The Ontario Round-up

This past week has been a very busy week for Red Cross in Ontario, so much so, that we decided to do a special local edition of the Red Cross Round-Up.

SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO- a severe snow storm this week closed Highway 402 between Sarnia and London, and left hundreds of motorists stranded in their vehicles. Red Cross volunteers were on stand by to  supply cots, blankets and comfort kits and other support.

NIAGARA REGION – Canadian Red Cross volunteers have been busy responding to two apartment fires, one affecting 97 residents and another affecting 200. Volunteers have conducted needs assessments and have helped those needing accommodations.

TORONTO – On Dec. 13, 4,000 students were evacuated at York University after a fire at the university’s heating plant. The same day, the City of Toronto had declared an extreme cold alert with wind chill temperatures reaching -20C. Red Cross volunteers set up a shelter to assist any students who needed a warm place to spend the night.

MILTON – A gas main exploded in a residential area in Milton yesterday, destroying two homes, and affecting 1200 homes. Red Cross volunteers set up a reception centre for residents who had to be evacuated from the scene.
