Raising a stink about sanitation

Morning commuters in Sydney, Australia had a bit of a surprise today: toilets out in the open outside a busy subway station. One person sat on each toilet reading, what else, the newspaper.

This bit of potty humour was courtesy of our friends at the Australian Red Cross who were recognizing World Toilet Day. If you have never heard of it before, it’s a day to raise awareness about the importance of sanitation. About 2.6 billion people around the world don’t have access to a toilet or proper sanitation, which can lead to the spread to disease.

The display was to also launch the Australian Red Cross’ new fundraising campaign “I Love My Bathroom” to raise money to provide sanitation and hygiene projects in developing countries.
