Discovering a Red Cross treasure

When we normally clean out our closets, we tend to find items we think are junk:  perhaps old smelly shoes; that blender that stopped working five months ago; that one birthday gift you’ve been meaning to regift etc.

But, when Judy Hawley of Calgary was recently helping her parents move she found a treasure – a Red Cross treasure that is. She found six editions of The Canadian Red Cross Junior Magazine from 1959-1960. Judy had a subscription to the magazine, when she was a small child growing up in southern Saskatchewan.

The children’s magazine contained activities, stories and safety tips. What were some of the main concerns in the 1960s? One safety tip for kids was to “not to play with your sick budgie” to avoid contracting polio. The disease killed or crippled many children and adults in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century.

Judy donated the magazines to the Red Cross, so Red Crossers can learn more about this piece of our history for many years to come.

Have you ever found any Red Cross treasures in your home or office? We would love to hear about them!
