Red Cross observes National Volunteer Week

As an active non-profit organization that is committed to helping people in need, the Canadian Red Cross provides humanitarian support for people both in Canada and around the globe.

From disaster relief to water safety courses, Canadian Red Cross programs grant people the ability to gain new skills and acquire greater confidence, which may be vital if they are faced with an emergency situation.

While Canadian Red Cross' programs are an important way in which the organization helps others, they would not be possible without the support of the passionate and knowledgeable volunteers who devote their time and energies to working with the Red Cross.

Together, volunteers help make a difference in their communities each day, which is why the Canadian Red Cross honours their contributions during National Volunteer Week.

Lending a helping hand

Observed from April 21 to April 27, National Volunteer Week is a celebration of the tens of thousands of volunteers across the country who dedicate their abilities to improving the lives of Canada's most vulnerable residents and communities.

"The Canadian Red Cross is built on the strength of our volunteers," said Secretary General and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross Conrad Sauvé. "Our commitment to volunteerism and community support is the core strength of the Canadian Red Cross and it will only continue to grow as our volunteers and staff work side by side to carry out our mission."

Last year, more than 45,000 people in Canada were helped directly by volunteers with the Red Cross. Following Hurricane Sandy, 69 volunteers were sent to the United States to support American Red Cross relief efforts, while more than 6,000 volunteers are ready to be deployed around the country for other emergencies that may develop.

How you can help

When people need help as a result of emergencies and disasters, volunteers are often the first to respond.

As one of the most active humanitarian organizations in Canada, the Canadian Red Cross relies on its dedicated team of staff and volunteers to provide an essential layer of support to people who have been affected by adversity.

If you want to help the Canadian Red Cross in its humanitarian mission both in the country and abroad, you should consider making a donation online or at a local office. Each contribution benefits those in need and can help you make a difference today. You should also consider the benefits of getting involved with the Red Cross as a volunteer today.
